S’troidz!: Week 2 Update

This week’s update is bittersweet. I added some cool stuff but had to dump dynamic game balancing. (It’s not you, it’s me) Deep down I knew it wouldn’t last. I just didn’t think I’d be killing it so soon. It’s still something I’d like to work on some day but for now, I’ll be rocking a more linear approach. It’s easier to test and much easier to change. Onward!

S’troidz! r2 Changelog

  • Added a logo.
  • Added a preloader.
  • Removed mouse cursor when the game starts.
  • Fixed focus so that you no longer have to click the game twice to start playing.
  • Added another alien! (clear 6 waves to meet him)
  • Improved fonts.
  • Added labels to scoreboard.
  • Linear game difficulty adjustment.
  • New hero ship!
  • New missle sprites for hero and aliens.
  • Increased large S’troid speed slightly.
  • More bugs!

Note: I’ve been testing Flex 4 builds of PBE and S’troidz! which target Flash Player 10.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s release of S’troidz! Up next is design and development of a “loot table” component that will allow for things like power-ups. I also need to suck it up and deal with some annoying gameplay issues. Finally, if there’s time I’d like to also start work on explosion sprites and maybe even sound.

As always your comments and criticisms are greatly appreciated.

Nice. The fonts are a real nice addition.

I would have expected the Lives counter to count down from 3 to 1 and then go to zero when the game ended. As is, your last life reads as “Lives: 0″ and then remains unchanged when you die for the final time.

    Very nice! Needs explosions though.

Is the source available? I think some of my advanced students would like to read it.

Nice man, it’s coming along :D
How did you generate the asteroids, I mean is it like an animation (how they rotate in what looks like 3d)

@Chris I had meant for this to mean “Lives Remaining”. Will have to check out some other games to see what the standard is.

@Matt The source isn’t ready for public consumption but there’s excellent demo code over at the PushButton Engine site.

@blend101 The asteroids are temporary until I either instantly become an artist or have someone help me. But to your question, I believe there are solutions out there that let you convert 3d animations to 2d sprite sheets. Tim Aste from PushButton Labs shared a bunch of links to game asset resources here: http://pushbuttonengine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=90&start=0&hilit=resources#p486
